Every Drum Circle is a Performance

Why This Matters

The audience and dancers are watching.

How You Achieve Success

You are part of the performance; act like it.

What You Do

  1. If you are there for the start of the rhythm, stay until the end of that rhythm.
  2. Be part of the performance during your time in the circle.

More In-Depth

It doesn't matter how big or small it is--as big as an on-stage, in costume performance; or a small gathering of friends around a backyard fire pit. That means that you don't get to be part of the audience, nor a photographer or videographer.

Especially in today's world where every cell phone has a video camera, and in many cases low-light capable and high definition, each performance needs to be worthy of someone shooting video.

There have been cases, unfortunately more than just a few, when one of the drummers in the circle wants to stop playing drums and instead shoot video from the drummer's perspective. This has negative consequences:

  1. Obviously, the performance look;
  2. The drummers stop adding to the drum circle, and as a result the circle is less robust; and
  3. Taking a picture with flash can blind the dancers, especially if they are turning away from something downstage.
